European Wasp
The
European Wasp is an aggressive introduced stinging insect now occurring
in
most parts of SE Australia (including Adelaide, the Riverland, Canberra
and most of Victoria). You can help prevent further establishment of
this pest by destroying the nest that is located on your property.
European Wasps are persistent, have a painful sting, and can sting
several times. However, the effects of the sting are not normally
severe, except in the case of an allergic reaction. In urban areas,
where they thrive, the wasps are attracted to fruit, meat and sweet
foods and drinks which often bring them close to people. They damage
ripening fruit on the vine – fruit pickers beware!
Bees
The
common honey bee is not quite as aggressive
as the European Wasps, but it can still be a pest nonetheless.

Bees are
very similar to wasps in that they are attracted to sweet
food, but can sting only once before dying. Around a bees nest may be
several drone (male) bees on the ground which can inflict a nasty sting
to the foot.
Wasps vs Bees
European
Wasps are usually
slightly larger than honey bees, although there are similar markings on
both Bees and Wasps. The black spots down the side of the abdomen are
characteristic of wasp. The wings on a wasp are generally longer than a
honey bee and the black antenna are usually longer and thicker. Wasps
tend to nest underground or in wall or roof spaces.
With Wasps and Bees it is wise to cover food and not to leave cans of
soft drink unattended. If a wasp enters a can, there is a possibility
of it stinging the mouth or throat of an unsuspecting drinker.
Removal
Removal
of wasps and bees is a
very straight forward procedure. First a full inspection is conducted
to measure the full extent of the infestation. After that the
appropriate chemicals are introduced to fully eradicate the pest from
the location.
