Termites
are the only members of the insect order Isoptera.
They are commonly referred to as 'White Ants' even though they are not
even closely related to ants.
There
are more than 300 species of termite found within Australia, of which
only 30 could be considered to be pests of timber in service, with the
species Coptotermes acinaciformis being
the one that causes the most problems.
Termites will eat any
cellulose based material. These include timber in buildings but can
also include furniture, paper materials and fabrics. They can
also damage non-cellulose materials such a s
polystyrene and plasterboard or the plastic coating on electrical
wiring.
Pictured is an example of this activity on some bricks in the sub floor of
a house. The mud, denoting the termites are clearly visible.
Termite
Management
Management of termites is an ongoing
procedure.
First
a full inspection is conducted to measure the full extent of the
infestation.
Then, the
appropriate pro duct is introduced
to manage the pest infestation. No system
can offer 100% protection, but with ongoing annual
inspections as recommended by the Australian Standards any subsequent activity can be treated
before any major structural damage occurs.
There are a variety of environmentally friendly pest management systems
to choose from:
